Adjusting the Width of Clothing

are there any tips and tricks for adjusting the width of clothing after the fact?

First things first: you should never make clothing tighter or looser by more than 3 cm, otherwise the fit will be ruined. Making it tighter is always easier—after all, taking off a centimeter here and there is simple, right? WRONG! You should remove the excess centimeters all around; the fit will thank you for it.
When making it wider, it also depends on whether you have enough fabric in the seams to achieve the desired width. Okay, you can also add other fabrics, but they should match the color and shape of the garment. With a blazer or suit pants, for example, that’s not an option.
Alterations aren’t that simple—you should take a close look and think about how to do it, or whether to leave it and sew a new one that fits properly.
