Dear users, dear authors,
what can you sew from old aprons?

What about really old aprons? Like the ones my grandma used to wear, for example? She always wore colorful smock aprons while working around the house and in the garden.

I also have some half-aprons lying around in my closet. They’re made of a lovely cotton fabric, some with lace—a neighbor gave them to me when she was clearing out her closet.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any of my grandma’s aprons left.

What could you sew with them? From the colorful aprons (I’m really into quilting right now), of course, a colorful memory quilt.

From the white aprons—you could sew pretty little pillows, or hearts and stars.

If they’re made of cotton, there are lots of things you could make with them, such as play pants for little kids, or painting smocks for kids, or—as Petra suggests—a quilt. You can even make a so-called “white quilt” out of white aprons; they look great.

Best regards, Inge

In the GDR, the pinafore aprons people wore at home were usually made of Dederon.
This material was easy to care for and dried quickly.
However, people smoked a lot back then, and the pinafore aprons often ended up with holes,
because Dederon was very sensitive to heat.

My mom would always sew shopping bags out of the old aprons.
You could also buy them made of Dederon.
If you were lucky or had the right connections, you could buy these shopping bags in stores.
Or you could sew them yourself.

Smocks worn at work were usually made of cotton.
My mom had white smocks, and my dad had dark blue ones.
When they were worn out or stained, the bad pieces were turned into cleaning rags.
The good pieces of the dark fabric—usually the backs of the smocks—
were turned into pillowcases for the garden bench.

The white pieces of fabric were embroidered or dyed.
I had a cover made from them, with trim for the decorative pillow in the stroller.
Napkins and doll bedding were also sewn from the good scraps.

We didn’t have much… 😊

Warm regards from Mona (Froschoma Mona)

Reading your posts, I have to commend you all for not throwing anything away—and for not planning to. You can always make something new out of everything. But these days, that’s not really the norm. When buying something new is cheaper than fixing it up, many people don’t even think twice about it. I hope that our posts will help change this perspective.

I’m a big fan of upcycling. However, there aren’t any aprons in my household, so I can’t really contribute much to the topic of this post. But I enjoyed your posts… I could picture the old, white, probably starched cotton aprons with lace in Petra’s closet and Mona’s Dedekoran shopping bags. We had ones like that back then, too.

I wanted to sew some painting smocks for the grandkids, but they didn’t want any. They think Dad’s old shirts—the ones that go down to the knees—are cooler :-) Okay, those need to be repurposed too, and they’re too good to donate to a clothing drive.

Best regards, Ina

Hello everyone, I have some old GDR Dederon and nylon smocks here and would be happy to pass them on to someone who would like to upcycle them or creatively repurpose them.
I can’t sew myself and don’t plan to, but I’d be happy if the pieces found a new use.If you’re interested, feel free to get in touch with me.Best regards
Enrico

In another forum—I think it was on Tauschticket—there was a thread about sewing bags, and someone there sewed various bags out of these old smock aprons; they looked really great, with such a nice retro vibe to the patterns.
