Hi, I found the following text in a pattern and unfortunately have no idea how to do it:
For the collar, knit in stockinette stitch in rows. For the collar shaping, on both sides of the 2nd row, place 2 sts on hold; repeat this 4 more times every 2nd row, turning the work with 1 yarn over and knitting back. Then knit across all sts again, always knitting the yarn over together with the following st in the 1st continuous row.
Can anyone help me?
Hi Spechtine,
welcome to the forum. If this is a pattern from here, you can always ask the author for help. If you tell me the name of the pattern or the author, or give me a link, I can also ask for help on your behalf. Would that work for you?
These are shortened rows....
You knit in stockinette stitch, but not all the way to the end of the row. You knit until there are two stitches left on the needle, yarn over, and then turn. These two stitches are not knitted.... "Back in the day," people would simply bind off these stitches, but I didn’t think that made for a very nice neckline. With this variation, once you’ve worked all the "decreases," knit across all the stitches once (don’t forget to knit the yarn overs together with the next stitch, otherwise the stitch count won’t match), and you’ll end up with a nice, even neckline....
Hi Steffi, thanks for your explanation.
How do I make a yarn over before turning? I only know the method of turning and then making a double stitch, like you do for heels.
For the yarn over, you just wrap the yarn around the needle once without knitting a stitch. But it doesn’t really matter whether you do a yarn over or a double stitch. Both methods prevent holes from forming in the row you knit over them.
I always knit short rows using the “Japanese short rows” method... For me, the double stitch always looks kind of funny when I knit over it 😁—so everyone has “their own” way of knitting short rows....
I’ll give it a try...
I won’t be able to pick up my needles again until tomorrow evening. I ordered some yarn for a scarf, and it won’t arrive until tomorrow. So tomorrow afternoon, I’ll wind it all into a ball, then head to the sofa with the pattern in hand, and off we go... I’m already so excited to see what the colors look like in person. It’s hand-dyed sock yarn.
