Crocheting as a Relaxation Method: Tips for Reducing Stress

is crocheting a relaxation method for you / does it help reduce stress?

I tend to overthink things, really getting stuck on them, which usually doesn’t help at all. It just makes me feel really uncomfortable.

That’s why it’s helpful for me to crochet something (though it could also be another type of handicraft) that
requires some concentration. If the pattern is too simple, it doesn’t help. That’s because a simple
pattern can be worked automatically, and then it’s easy for my mind to wander again.

But when the patterns require attention, it’s possible to create some distance from my thoughts
—or even my feelings.

Absolutely—at least for me. When I can do something with my hands, it really helps me unwind. Gardening used to work pretty well for that, too, but now that I don’t have a garden, I’m grateful for every ball of yarn I can work with.

Yes, it helps me too to interrupt the constant whirl of thoughts in my head when I’m crafting.

Whether it’s knitting or crocheting, the main thing is a pattern where I have to count. That way, my thoughts can’t wander off on their own, because then I’ll make a mistake right away and have to rip it back.

Gardening or painting furniture also helps me reduce stress.
