Replacing a rotary cutter

Dear users, dear designers,
if you don’t have a rotary cutter, what can you use instead? Is a pair of scissors and a little skill a suitable substitute?

I’ve never owned a rotary cutter, so in principle, scissors seem to do the trick. I think scissors are the essential tool—the rotary cutter is just a bit of a luxury on top of that.

No, Veronika, replacing a rotary cutter isn’t that easy once you’re used to it. With patchwork, for example, a rotary cutter guarantees precise and accurate cutting; you’ll never get that level of precision and accuracy with scissors. Also, when you’re working with delicate lace and fabrics—like when making bras and panties, or sewing a swimsuit—a rotary cutter is the better choice for cutting out patterns. There are even small blades with a 28mm diameter that are perfect for cutting curves, especially when working with lingerie.

Here’s my collection of rotary cutters—for me, these are indispensable tools :-)
There’s a circular rotary cutter in there—that’s the one on the right edge of the picture, standing on the tip of a needle—then one for cotton fabrics, one for plush (since I’m always sewing teddy bears), one for denim, and the small 28mm one is for jersey. I need the circular cutter when I need circular fabric pieces, such as for bowl covers or round pillows, etc.

I inherited a rotary cutter and had no idea what to do with it. Thanks for the explanation. But I very rarely sew. Maybe that will change someday.....

Thank you, Inge, for showing us your collection and explaining it to us. I have one too, and I’ve already used it. But I didn’t know there were different wheel sizes. Now that you’ve mentioned the tight curves, I understand why there are models with small wheels.
