Dear users, dear authors,
Do you have any tips for beginner knitters?

I always think a scarf is a great place to start—just garter stitch, not too many stitches on the needle, and you can see progress pretty quickly.

Yes, I’d also say a scarf is a great project—using just knit stitches.

If it’s for a younger child, maybe a pillowcase or a small blanket for a doll.

That’s how I got started

The scarf for my doll was my first project, and then at some point I moved on to pants. My grandma taught me back then. She always knitted something for herself, and I’d get the leftover yarn to make clothes for my dolls.

I see it a little differently. You should pick a project that you really want to knit and wear. Not necessarily a Fair Isle piece with a steek and all that—which really requires practice—but a simple raglan started from the top with a little pattern, cables, or something like that; that’s definitely doable. If you take it step by step, it’s really no problem. From casting on to knit and purl stitches, increases, other knitting techniques, and binding off—you can always find tutorials on YouTube.
My basic idea is that you should have fun with it and end up with something you really like. If that’s a scarf, great! Then go for it! But back then, I quickly left my knitting supplies lying in the corner because I started with exactly that kind of “beginner project.”

It really does make a difference at what age you start. I think a child would be a bit overwhelmed by a raglan sweater right off the bat—even just in terms of the time it takes.

Sure. But I was assuming we were talking about adults. With kids, the focus is a bit different.
