Crocheting tapestry in rows....

I needed a little project to
work on in between and would like to crochet a wall hanging.... using the tapestry stitch, though I’ve only ever crocheted it in rounds so far. Now I want to crochet it in rows without those fringes. I just saw a video online. She crochets the wrong side row “backward.” You insert the hook from the back. That way, I get an even front side. Has anyone ever tried this before?
Right now, I’m getting my crochet hook all “tangled up,” and I’m not so sure if I like the result. But then again, I’m using very fine yarn on my hook. Cotton on a size 2 hook.... Should I maybe use acrylic yarn instead—something a little thicker and not as smooth?

Good morning, I also crochet in rows, using Catania cotton (125 m / 50 grams).

I like my patterns when I crochet the wrong side row as I would with any crochet project, and I can see the pattern clearly.

I’m curious to see what your front side looks like after crocheting backward—maybe I’ll change my crocheting style too. I’ll look for a video online.

When I first started, I probably got stuck right away on the first post—there, single crochets were always used, and the color change was the important part.

I used these reverse stitches on my dog-shaped pencil case. First, you crochet in rounds, and then (for the opening on the belly) in rows. To make the transition in the pattern less noticeable, I came up with the idea of using reverse stitches there. See for yourself: there’s still a slight difference, but it’s not as noticeable as it would be if you’d crocheted in rows the usual way.

At first, inserting the hook backward takes some getting used to, but if you don’t crochet too tightly, it gets easier over time.

That’s so cute....
I’m thinking my yarn might not be the right fit.
Inserting the hook is fine, but for me, the problem is picking up the threads—I always end up with twisted stitches on the front (in knitting, those would be crossed stitches)...
Plus, I have to crochet relatively tightly since I’m working with four colors—crocheting with one and “hiding” the other three. If it gets too loose, you can see the other colors through the single crochet stitches 🤨

Now I understand the back rows too.

Thanks, Ruth, for the explanation. I’ve learned something new that I’m sure will come in handy for future projects.

Hello,
how cool is that? I had a look on YT
Crocheting reverse single crochet stitches
The things you find 🤔, but since you can knit backwards too 😉
Amazing what the web and YT make possible—just type it in and there you go 👍
I’ll have to try it too. I’ve also had Tapestry “in mind” but haven’t really dared to give it a go yet,
maybe now 😇

That’s so cool. I didn’t know that either. I definitely have to try it out.
You’re always learning something new. Thanks for the tip.
