Dear Users, Dear Authors,
When children learn to crochet, is the process the same as for adults, or are there differences?

I learned to crochet as a child. I was interested in it, so someone taught me.

Crochet used to be taught in elementary schools, too. I don’t know if that’s still the case today. Back then, all the kids had to learn the basic techniques, and some were more interested than others... :-D
I don’t think every child would find that so great.

With adults, I assume they want to learn to crochet and are motivated to stick with it.

Yes, I also learned it as a child in elementary school, and I think it definitely could have been more child-friendly. We crocheted pot holders and coasters out of raffia for wine bottles.
Kids pick up a technique pretty quickly, but it’s even easier when it’s fun.
An adult can certainly get excited about pot holders and the like, but kids would definitely prefer something else.

I learned to crochet from my grandma before I even started school. With her help, I was allowed to crochet clothes for my doll.

The projects at school weren’t very interesting. That carried on throughout my entire time at school.

I remember a slipover—made from granny squares—that I never wore. And a skirt—it didn’t really fit.

If the activities offered to children were interesting, then kids and teens would actually enjoy learning. But with instructions like “Now let’s crochet a few potholders,” you can’t spark their interest. What child needs a potholder?

Home economics class at school was a nightmare. The girls had to come in extra in the afternoons, and the boys would mess around by the window because they had the afternoon off.
My home economics teacher said I’d never in my life be able to make a straight potholder. (Mine ended up being triangular 😁) But she also never showed me what I was doing wrong.

When I was about 12, my younger sisters were born. That’s when I got interested in crocheting. My grandma taught me some things, and I figured out the rest by reading instruction booklets. I even crocheted a christening gown.

My son was in preschool and was really encouraged there. He then came up with the idea that he wanted to learn how to crochet and knit. I taught him a lot, and he threw himself into it with enthusiasm.

When children want to learn to crochet on their own, you should encourage them. Forcing them to do it doesn’t accomplish anything.
