How big are your fabric scraps?

Hi everyone,

I keep seeing the term “fabric scraps” here.
At what size do you consider a piece of fabric to be a scrap?

Since my passion is patchwork and quilting, for me, a piece of cotton fabric smaller than 3x3 cm is a fabric scrap that can no longer be used. I can always find a use for everything else eventually. ;-)

How about you?
At what point does a piece of fabric become a scrap?

Best regards
Chris

Woooooo, that’s a good question, Chris. I also did a lot of patchwork for a long time and saved every little scrap for my patchwork projects.  But I don’t do that anymore, because now that everyone in my family has at least 3–4 quilts from me, and I can’t do English paper piecing anymore either, I’ve given up patchwork. What I still save now are jersey scraps that I can use for children’s hats and so on. I only still save cotton fabric scraps to maybe make little children’s blankets from them, nothing more

Best regards, Inge

My smallest scraps are around 12 x 12 cm—I can still make Easter decorations to hang up with them; anything smaller is just used as filler.

Hi Inge,
hi Veronika!

@Akela
Thank you so much for sharing your experiences! Yes, preferences and possibilities change over the course of a lifetime—I notice that time and again, too... ;-)

@veronika-t15
Your Easter decoration idea sounds interesting! Are you making Easter eggs out of it?

Do you shred your fabric scraps into tiny pieces to use them as stuffing? What a great way to use them!

Best wishes, and I hope you both continue to have fun with your crafts!
Chris

Yeah, Chris, those will become hanging eggs—I’ll take a picture.
And no, no need to shred them on purpose—just run the scissors through them a few times or tear them up, then they’re simply crumpled up and go into a teddy bear’s belly or something like that.

Good morning, Veronika,
@veronika-t15

The Easter eggs look great; the decorations are very creative!

Thank you for the detailed description; maybe I'll just give it a try.

Best regards
Chris
