What does “knit garter stitch” mean?

Knitting garter stitch is a great technique, especially for beginners. That’s because you only ever knit knit stitches—in both the right side rows and the wrong side rows. It looks particularly beautiful when you use a gradient yarn. And the piece doesn’t curl up.

Here’s an example of what the garter stitch pattern looks like with a gradient yarn:



And this is what the pattern looks like when you use a different color for each new row. The pattern has a more rustic look and isn’t as smooth.

When knitting garter stitch, each stitch is knit in every row. This creates a horizontal line. I think it’s called garter stitch because the fabric appears wavy. With stockinette stitch, the fabric appears smooth.

I think garter stitch looks really nice on blankets and scarves because it somehow ends up looking more voluminous than stockinette stitch.

Garter stitch is quick to work. However, the piece tends to be quite loose and loses its shape more easily than other patterns.
