To be honest, my trick for stuffing is usually: “knead” and roll the stuffed piece in my hands until it fits :D It sounds a bit like making pizza dough, but yes.
Most of the time, it eventually takes on a nice shape! :)
For thin parts like little arms or similar, I like to help it along by shaping the stuffing with a crochet hook or something similar.
Otherwise, depending on the intended use, you can also use different stuffing.
For round things, for example, you can crochet around balls; they’ll definitely always stay in shape!
But I’d be happy to read along; maybe someone else has more tips!
Stuff the amigurumi with many small portions of stuffing instead of one large amount—this ensures even distribution and results in fewer dents and bulges. Keep adding stuffing until everything is nice and plump, but not too plump, otherwise the stitches will stretch apart and unsightly holes will form.
I’m one of those people who loves to knead and roll the stuffing 🤣—that’s how I get everything into the perfect shape. Otherwise, the only thing that helps is crocheting very tightly so there are no holes, and then stuffing it not too tightly, but as tightly as possible, always adding small amounts little by little.
For very small and thin parts (like arms, for example), stuffing really is best; for a chubby belly or a round head, you can also use fabric scraps, shredded old shirts, old socks, or something similar.
I totally agree with you guys: You just knead the stuffing until it fits ^^ However, in my experience, it also depends a lot on the type of stuffing you use.
The fluffier the stuffing is and the more bounce it has, the fewer dents and bulges you’ll get. For stuffing amigurumi, I find that a more compact stuffing or, as Veronika also says, fabric scraps are the better choice, since they also provide some bulk and can thus ensure, for example, that the amigurumi stands up well. Even if you have to knead them into shape accordingly :P
For stuffed animals or softer projects in general, though, I prefer to use “high-fluff” stuffing (probably my own made-up term o.O)—that is, a type that’s very fine and has high elasticity. This way, it weighs less for the same volume and feels softer, making it better suited for stuffed animals or amigurumi that are meant to be cuddled.
Ultimately, though, it’s probably a matter of personal preference.
