Dear users, dear authors,
What should you keep in mind when you want to knit a larger project?

If the project includes one or more patterns, you should mark the spot in the pattern where you left off.
Ideally, you should finish knitting one pattern repeat.
I do this right on my computer. Then I can delete the mark once I’ve continued knitting.

Stitch markers are also helpful.

In my opinion, you shouldn’t lose patience along the way if you’re tackling a big project. :-) I’m in the middle of knitting a cozy blanket and just measured one side—I’m at about 150 cm now, but that’s not enough yet. When it’s finished, it should be about 180 cm by 180 cm. I’m not using a pattern—just garter stitch

Best regards, Inge

And be sure to stock up on enough yarn right away, because often that exact yarn won’t be available anymore after a while.

For larger projects, I always set myself small milestones. It’s much more fun that way. For example, with a sweater that I start from the bottom, first just up to where the sleeves begin... and so on.

You should also be clear about the size and measurements beforehand. It’s absolutely essential to knit a gauge swatch. I had to unravel my work a few times before I understood that.

You should make sure you have enough yarn, because if you set it aside and wait for more, the next idea will come along.

You should take notes on how many stitches, what needle size, and how many centimeters until decreases. It’s better to write or note these details a bit more thoroughly, because often quite a few days pass before you get around to knitting the second sleeve, for example.

Start early. You don’t want the season to be over by the time you’ve woven in the last end.

Petra, I couldn’t agree more! Unfortunately, I’ve had some painful experiences with this: I started a sweater for my husband, didn’t write down the needle size or the stitch pattern, didn’t keep the pattern safe, set the project aside for a while because there were more urgent projects—and now I’m left with a long-term UFO just sitting there… The same thing is happening with a summer sweater I’m making for myself, but that will probably end up getting unraveled soon, since I don’t like the original plan anymore.
It also seems important to me not to let long breaks happen, as they can really sap your motivation. And, before the stitches are bound off and the ends are woven in, don’t browse CP too often, since we come across way too many new temptations here…

If you’re using variegated yarn, you should lay out the skeins beforehand. The skeins start with different colors, so you’ll need to figure out where each one goes first.

For large knitting projects, it’s a good idea to incorporate a safety line every few rows. This can be a long, sturdy strand of yarn or even the cord from a circular needle. Leave it in the work every 10 rows, for example, and if you make a mistake or lose a stitch that can’t be salvaged, you can easily rip back to the safety line without losing anything.
Here’s an example

@Mel,
is this an excerpt from one of your patterns?

There are many things to keep in mind. It also depends on whether it’s a new project, if you’re following a pattern, or just knitting for fun, off the top of your head.

  • Do I have enough yarn? That’s really important. With a big project, you might end up taking a break. Later on, you might not be able to find that yarn anymore. That happens more often than you’d think. I often see posts on social media asking for yarn that’s no longer available.
  • For a new project for creating a pattern, I bought a notebook. Here, I write everything down step by step right from the start. Along the way, I take photos and mark the spot in the pattern text with an “asterisk.” That way, I know exactly where the photo goes later on. Once the pattern is finished, I can remove that page.
  • If it’s a project that involves a lot—and I mean a lot—of loose ends to weave in, I always do that at the end of the day. It motivates me because I can see, based on the little threads, how much I’ve accomplished in a day. But it also carries the risk that unraveling the work later won’t be as easy.

You shouldn’t lose the joy of working on your project.
Sometimes it makes sense to set it aside for a few days and work on a small, quick project in between. Think of it as a little “treat,” because it offers a quick sense of accomplishment.
And then the big project becomes fun again.
At least that’s how it is for me 😉

I do the same thing.
I work on small projects in between to keep the fun alive while working on the big one.

Hi, I’d also recommend reading the pattern completely and thoroughly beforehand. That way, I can plan better and sometimes even optimize the steps compared to the pattern.
Best regards 🎉
