Dear users, dear authors,
I’d really like some cake right now. Edible cake. Somehow it seems to me like we have more crocheted food in the shop than we used to. Do you like it?

Have you seen the marble cake?
At first glance, it looked pretty convincing in the thumbnail / small preview image.

Hi everyone :-)

Josefa invited me to share a little about why I write crochet patterns for play kitchens.

That’s exactly why I started crocheting again six years ago. My daughter, who was 18 months old at the time, was just getting her first molars and had been keeping me up all night for weeks, so I desperately needed a new outlet to keep me sane amid all the sleep deprivation ;-) That’s how I eventually ended up crocheting. Since food items are often very quick and easy to crochet, it was the perfect way for me to get started—you get a quick sense of accomplishment, which in turn motivates you to keep going, and at the same time, you’ve created something useful that your own kids really enjoy. To this day, both of my children (ages 7 and 3) play with their crocheted food items almost every day.

However, I soon realized that there simply weren’t any patterns for some of the popular everyday foods from our daily life. For example, I wanted to crochet a plain slice of bread for my kids—just a really simple slice of country bread—but when I searched for “crochet bread,” surprisingly, only toast ever came up. So I set out to create a slice of country bread myself. It was a similar story with cakes. There were plenty of patterns for cake slices and the like, but no pattern for classic cakes like marble cake or cheesecake, the way I know and love them from my childhood.

For a long time, I kept these designs just for myself and my kids and never wrote down the crochet steps. But last year, my husband kept encouraging me to write them down and make them available to others. Eventually, I actually mustered the courage to follow his advice and realized that I could now combine several of my favorite hobbies: designing, crocheting, photography, and writing. It doesn’t get any better than that ;-)

With my patterns, I simply want to make all those wonderful foods possible for others—the ones I couldn’t find patterns for back then. That’s my motivation behind marble cake and co. :-)

Nice post. Thanks, mermieswelt. Would you like to post more often in the forum or use the promotional threads as well?

Absolutely!
And these look good enough to eat! It almost makes me sad that I don’t have a play kitchen!

Thank you :-)

I don’t think I’ve had enough sales from the promotional threads yet. But I’ll stop by the forum every now and then :-)

Crocheted food for the kids’ play kitchen is a really great idea for toddlers. When my granddaughter was 2 years old, she wanted to feed her teddy bear, too. That’s when I got the idea to crochet her favorite foods. Now she’s 6 and her little sister is 3. Both of them play with the crocheted food very often and enjoy it, which of course makes me happy.

There are no limits to creativity here. I think all toddlers love it.
