Dressed-Up Fruit Crate

I never throw away those little crates that mandarins are sold in, because you can spruce them up beautifully and use them as storage baskets. I already have several in the cupboard filled with overlock thread or other odds and ends. This one will now be the home for my crafting supplies that I had lying loose on the shelf.

Inge, that’s such a great idea. I’ll definitely have to keep that in mind. So many things pile up, and when they’re organized in these pretty boxes, they’re much easier to find.

What a lovely idea. We don’t throw them away either—my husband keeps them in the basement and uses them to store all sorts of little odds and ends.

Thank you all, I'll show you 2 more little crates that I've had for a while. The red one has dark overlock threads in it, especially dark shades of red; the crate with the jute cover holds my specialty threads, such as metallic threads or leather threads. I just stood it upright so you can see what something like this looks like inside.

Nice, nice, Inge. They’re made of such lovely, thin wood. You could even build little doll beds out of them. But your use for them is clever, too. Couldn’t you cover up the wooden feet somehow? Put little crocheted “socks” over them. I’m sure you have some yarn left over from your projects. It’s so woody—it bothers my eyes.

Great idea, Inge! I’ve already painted a few and put them to good use.
My husband also keeps them on his workshop shelf for odds and ends that would otherwise just be lying around.
