Used more yarn than I bought in 2022

Just before the end of the year, I did it—I knitted, crocheted, and crafted with more yarn than I bought this year.

Yesterday I crossed the threshold—finished projects with a total weight of 6,133 grams.

In 2022, I bought a total of 6,100 grams.

The photos are from two shopping trips. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any group photos of the rest of my shopping trips—but I vow to do better in the new year.

So I can say that ever since I started keeping my spreadsheet (in 2018), I’ve used more yarn each year than I’ve bought. And yet I still have mountains of yarn scattered all over the house.

Congratulations!
When I look at the space in my closet, my balance sheet probably isn’t quite as good, but just to be safe, I’m not even going to do the math. 🤣

Wow, that’s quite a lot, Petra. Sounds impressive.

It’s the same for me—I’ve bought less than I’ve used. But somehow, it doesn’t seem to be getting any less… It must be magic yarn… ;-)

Well, I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, but 33 g is just half a skein...
I actually only ever buy yarn for specific projects. But since I’m always afraid it won’t be enough and I won’t be able to find the same color number again, I buy 1–2 skeins more than I actually need. And so my yarn mountain just keeps growing and growing...

True, the project-specific yarn is in the closet, but it’ll be used up soon. For example, there’s quite a bit for the temperature blanket, which I want to start on January 1—so I probably shouldn’t even count that.
Although it’s going to get off to a rather unusual start—it’s going to be spring-like here at the turn of the year, so not exactly the right time for cold-weather colors.

In 2022, I bought 2 skeins of 50 grams each, 1 yarn cake of 1,500 meters and one of 3,000 meters. And I still have... an estimated 25 kilos in the closets.

I received a lot as gifts and collected it over the years. There’s even still some from Grandma. It still has the original retail price on it. Haha

This year it was the same old story everyone knows. Unfortunately, I don’t have any yarn for the project. Hihiiii

....at least half a skein.... 😁
I think that’s great! Congratulations .
My closet looks a bit “emptier,” but somehow there’s still plenty in there—as Monika already said, “magical yarns.” I started most of my projects in 2022 with yarn from the closet and then had to reorder because I ran out, and since things have gotten pretty colorful lately, that wasn’t a problem at all—no worries about color numbers and such....
Today I actually bought two skeins of yarn. I’ve been eyeing them for a week 🙈—the colors are so beautiful, I just couldn’t resist.

Congratulations, Petra.
I like group photos of yarn balls and finished projects. I think that’s great.

I’m actually quite modestly stocked when it comes to my yarn stash.
It fits into two drawers.

I bought just under 1 kilo of yarn this year.

I don’t know how large my total stash was or is.

Ruth, I know that 33 grams isn’t really much… but I only weighed the finished pieces. I still have two loop scarves and a triangular shawl up there. All three are missing a few rows—or rather, I don’t know yet if they’re finished, if I need to add a few more rows, or if I should just rip them out and start over.

I’m glad I’m not an online shopper—otherwise I’d be broke. I find shopping at the click of a button very tempting.

I wanted to buy some yarn this week for a baby gift, which would have completely ruined my progress, of course. But I’ve been sick since Sunday, so shopping at Yarn Paradise isn’t an option. But new year… new shopping trip—for the baby gift

I really admire you, Petra. — Congratulations!
I also only ever buy yarn for specific projects. So I have quite a few new projects in my closet. And there’s still some of my mom’s yarn in there that I just can’t bring myself to give away. I also received some beautiful yarn as a birthday gift.
Unfortunately, I can’t say that it has gotten any less for me. There must be calories hiding somewhere in my closet. My yarn is gaining weight.
I’m going to put it on a diet for next year. 🤣
Wishing you a speedy recovery, Petra.

Thanks for the get-well wishes.

Looking at my consumption patterns this year, I’ve used up all the yarn I bought over the past six months. I really like that.

Now I need some ideas on what to do with my stash of yarn.

Hi,
now that’s an idea—weighing the wool that’s been used up.
I do take photos of the finished projects, but weighing them, or weighing my stash—
that idea hadn’t occurred to me yet. I usually have so many projects in mind (and for many of them, I already have the wool 🙄),
but somehow it doesn’t get any less—if anything, it gets more 😇

I’ve been weighing my yarn since mid-2018.

I’ve been writing down what kind of yarn I buy and how much for quite some time now—at some point, I completely lost track of it all.

For example, I know that the yarn I cast on this morning for wrist warmers No. 13 was purchased back in 2017. It’s well-aged yarn by now.

2020 was the first year of the pandemic. My consumption was particularly high that year, and my purchases were low… but we weren’t really allowed to go shopping anyway.

And in 2022, I’ve already set aside 1,000 grams for the spring 2023 color challenge.

Wow, you’re really getting through a lot—I can’t possibly knit that much!
