Quote from me from the thread Rotary Cutters and Patchwork Rulers
**The small rotary cutter is also ideal if you sew your own bras and the like, because the smaller blade goes around every
curve many times more easily than the large rotary cutter. On top of that, when you cut
lingerie with scissors, you always lift the fabric a little, because you
have to get one blade underneath the layer of fabric; with the rotary cutter,
it stays flat and nothing shifts or stretches. This is especially important when sewing bras,
because the cups should sit well and
fit properly.**
I don’t wear underwire bras, because I have a 3 cm scar on my left breast exactly where the underwires end, and every underwire rubs there like crazy, so bras with underwires have been banished from my wardrobe.
But if the underwire does go wandering, it’s better to close the hole with a small piece of fabric after you’ve pushed the underwire back in, otherwise it will keep coming out and poking you. This repair is only worthwhile if the rest of the bra is still fairly new; otherwise, off to the trash with it, or you’ll just keep getting annoyed by it and it will get pushed to the back of the drawer.
Well, I try to sew it back in if the rest of the bra still looks decent. Usually, a few stitches in all directions are enough, and you can still wear it for a little while.
I’m in the same boat as Inge. Due to surgery, I can no longer wear underwire bras. But even before that, I found them very uncomfortable. Fortunately, there are good alternatives these days.
I recently saved my daughter-in-law’s favorite bra.
Unfortunately, a few stitches weren’t enough. I cut
a small piece
of soft scrap fabric (so it wouldn’t cause any extra chafing) to fit and sewed it on by hand. Before doing that,
I filed the metal underwire down a bit so it wouldn’t poke through again so quickly.
So far, no complaints ;)
Best regards, Karola
Hats off to the bra savers!
It hasn’t happened to me yet since I started sewing. But then again, I’m not really much of a repair seamstress. I once read about a service where you could send in bras—even just to have the straps shortened, for example. But if the bra is already worn out, I’d just cut the underwires out. Maybe I’ll sew a corset someday.
I hate underwire bras—they’re always poking me and slipping out of place, so I just toss them.
I only wear non-underwire bras, and occasionally push-up bras. Unfortunately, though, I can’t find any decent ones that really fit me or that I like.
