New Crocheter – Hi Everyone!! + First Question

Hi, everyone!

I just started crocheting! I’m really enjoying it and I definitely want to get better.

I bought a book with different crochet patterns, but now I have a problem—I must be following this pattern wrong, because mine looks different?!

Does anyone know of a video, or would you be so kind as to explain what I’m doing wrong??

Oh, and—is there an app for this website? :)

I’m sure, though, that the users and authors can give you tips on slip stitches / slip-stitch ribbing, if their time allows.

We can only provide support here for patterns that are sold here, simply because only the author knows the pattern well enough to offer meaningful help.
We can answer general questions here in the forum, but we can’t provide customer support for the book you purchased.
Please call them and ask if they have an email address; then you can contact them in writing.

It’s normal for your projects to look different from the ones in the book.

As a beginner, you first need to figure out whether you crochet loosely or tightly.
Depending on that, you’ll need either a thinner or thicker crochet hook for the yarn you’re using.

You can look up how to crochet different stitches on YouTube.
Or maybe you know someone nearby who can show you in person.

Hi, yeah, unfortunately it really does look completely different. It’s a chain stitch rib pattern, and as I understand it, I’m supposed to make XY chain stitches—for the first row, insert the hook only into the back loop of the V, and from then on, always insert the hook into both loops of the V and make chain stitches. But mine ends up looking totally different :(

I just typed “crocheting slip stitch ribbing” into YouTube, and I think you’ll find something there,
maybe then you’ll see whether you’re doing something wrong 🤔
Or as CreatOwl already said, it’s of course completely normal, especially for beginners, that it doesn’t immediately look “perfect” like in a photo in a book.
For example, I crochet very loosely, so I usually have to switch to a smaller hook; you get a feel for that over time. Just keep at it 😉
When I cook, it NEVER looks like it does in the book — but that’s because I also like to change things a bit 😇

I don’t need support for the crochet book... I just wanted to know how these slip-stitch ribs work... and why mine look so weird... 

No one here on the forum can explain to you how to make these slip stitch ribs from your book. Only the authors of your book can do that. 

Since you’ve apparently deleted your account, I wish you the best of luck with your crochet projects.
You can definitely get help here in the forum, but not with patterns from books—for those, you’ll need to ask the respective author.

I think a photo of your crochet stitches would have been helpful 🤔

She placed her crochet project on top of the book with the pattern and then took a photo so that the page with the pattern was clearly visible. Of course, I had to delete it because she doesn’t own the rights to the book.
Since she posted the link to the crochet book here, I looked it up before deleting the link and actually found a phone number. She could have called that number and gotten help specific to the crochet pattern she was using.

I—and we here—are happy to help, but sometimes the forum just isn’t the right place to turn to.
