Fabric cutting went wrong—now what?

Dear users, dear authors,
if something went wrong while cutting the fabric, what should you do?

First, get really annoyed at how silly it was that it happened, then set it aside, take a close look at the rest of the fabric, and see what I can make of it so it still turns out okay. Most of the time, I can still salvage it, even if the piece ends up different than I planned. This usually happens when you’re not fully focused, which is why I always try to block out everything else when I’m cutting out fabric.

Best regards, Inge

You know your way around this and know how to do it. But what about someone who isn’t as skilled?

If you “just” forgot the seam allowance, what do you do then?

I (as someone who’s more of a beginner when it comes to sewing :)) usually take it in stride.
Then it’ll just be a pair of pants/a T-shirt/… in a smaller size :D
So far, if I’ve been short on seam allowance, for example, I’ve always just sewn the pieces together anyway, and it’s always fit someone.
If I’ve cut something completely wrong, I’ve always “saved” it somehow with some kind of seam (just sew something onto it or something and claim “that’s how it’s supposed to be”) or I’ve made something smaller out of it :) A planned adult shirt just turned into a kids’ shirt or something like that.

(Yeah, I definitely couldn’t sell my sewing projects—but hey—it’s fun, and so far everyone who’s received a gift has been happy ;))

Well, then the garment will be too small—that’s no good. With a teddy bear or a bag, you can make up for it—it’ll just be a little smaller—but with a jacket or pants… oh boy, that’s enough to make you want to bite the edge of the table!
I once ordered a “Teddy Bear Surprise Bag.” It came with all the materials and the pattern, but no picture of the finished teddy bear—that was exciting and a lot of fun. Partly because there was so much fur and paw fabric included that you could even afford to make a mistake here and there.

For example, I’m sewing myself a winter jacket using a hoodie sewing pattern. But since I only need size 50 now and no longer 52/54 like the pattern is, and I don’t really feel like making major changes, I’m cutting the jacket right to the edge, i.e. I’m cutting without a seam allowance. That way it fits, because I also want to line the jacket and need extra width for that, which isn’t included in the pattern since it’s actually a hoodie, but with this trick you create the width you need :-)
I want to sew my jacket from this fabric

Best, Inge

I always have to remind myself never to cut fabric in the evening. It’s happened to me a few times that I wasn’t alert enough to avoid making a mistake. A wrong cut is a wrong cut. Either the pattern was upside down and the flower heads were all facing down in the back, or I ended up with two left-side pieces, or the grainline was wrong. That’s really frustrating. Unlike with wool, you only get one chance when cutting fabric.

Since I only wear the things I sew at home, I wear them in their “adjusted version”—that is, shorter than planned or with the cut adjusted here and there afterward. What else can you do? If it turns out really bad, you can always sew something for the grandkids out of it, as long as the pattern, material, and colors match.

Best regards, Ina

Thankfully, it’s been a long time since I’ve cut fabric incorrectly.

But it happens to me regularly with my appliqués—they end up mirror-reversed. And with names or lots of individual pieces, that’s always super annoying.
