Making fine knit fabric

Dear users, dear authors,
can you make fine knit fabric by hand, or should it generally be machine-made?

Fine-gauge knit only looks good when it’s machine-made; no one has needles fine enough to do it well by hand, especially since fine-gauge knit is usually made from very thin yarns. You’d have to knit yourself silly to get it like that, and still wouldn’t manage it

I think so, too. My mother used to have a knitting machine like that; you could make some really fine items with it, and every stitch looked exactly like the next.

Okay, so you need a machine for fine knit.
But what about coarse knit or heavy knit—can that be done well by hand, for example, for sweaters?

Yes, *chunky knit* is easy to make by hand—after all, there are plenty of women here who knit blankets, sweaters, and so on. However, I wouldn’t want to cut something from my own hand-knitted chunky fabric, because there’s a very high risk that the stitches will start to unravel.

Do you then have to stitch it down before cutting it?

It would be advisable to serge the edges of this chunky knit with an overlocker before sewing it together if you don’t want the stitches to start running.
