It doesn’t bother me at all when it’s hot. I can do needlework anytime, anywhere. A day without needles and yarn is a day wasted. In the garden, all I need is a shady spot,
I suffer like a dog in this heat; I can’t get much done and am often laid up because my circulation simply gives out. About 90 minutes after my shower, I look as if they had just pulled me out from under it, my hair is that soaking wet. Dry hair is a real matter of luck for me in these temperatures. I’m happy about every day when the heat takes a break; summer is definitely not my season.
I usually spend about 5–6 hours working on a teddy bear when it is sewn by hand; the last pink one took me 2 days.
When I’m crafting, I have to wash my hands more often and make sure to dry them thoroughly in between, because sweaty fingers leave marks on the paper. But that’s really the only problem :-).
I’m a big fan of summer, too—the heat doesn’t bother me at all—but the frequent humidity here in Cologne is a real pain. We’re lucky that we can leave all the windows open at night; we don’t live on the ground floor, and so far the nights have always been cool enough that the place gets well ventilated. During the day, we keep everything tightly shut.
This afternoon it was 31 degrees; now it’s 17, since it’s been raining heavily again—perfect for knitting even with a thicker wool blanket.
My circulation goes haywire when it goes from warm to cool over a longer period—not the other way around. That was always very exhausting when we came back from our fall vacation in the sunny south in late November/early December; it always took me two to three days before I could function normally again.
I don’t find the heat as unpleasant as I did when I was younger, but when it’s hot for so long that even the wind feels warm… yuck :-))
I can still do crafts because our patio is in partial shade. However, when the air is “shimmering,” the wool sticks to my fingers, so I switch to cotton or linen ;-)
But the muggy heat (like we’re having right now) really affects my circulation, and on some days I feel like I spend more time lying down than actually getting anything done :-\/
It’s only really bad when it’s extremely hot... Depending on the type of yarn, it can get sticky on your hands, which makes crafting very uncomfortable.
