Winding a yarn cake / Knit Pro yarn winder

Hi everyone :-)
I bought the wooden yarn winder from Knit Pro and am trying my hand at winding my first yarn cake. It’s working great so far, but unlike professionally wound yarn cakes, you can’t see the color gradient in mine. The yarn cake looks like a little barrel, and the colors are hidden inside. Could this be due to the type of winder or my technique?
