Yarn Question

Hi everyone,

I told you the other day that I found some overlock thread cones in my stash that I’d bought at a fabric market. Now I’d like to use them in my regular sewing machine. But you can’t put the large cones on the holder where the sewing thread spool usually goes (upper thread). So

how do I get thread from the large overlock thread cone to use as the upper thread on a regular sewing machine? Do I fill a bobbin and place it where the sewing thread spool usually goes? But my sewing thread isn’t mounted vertically—it’s positioned sideways. What do you do in this case? The thread is actually plentiful and beautiful.

If you can’t picture what I mean with my thread spool lying on its side, I’ll take a photo tomorrow. Maybe it’ll be easier to understand then. Unfortunately, I don’t have time right now… the family and the grandkids are expecting us for coffee. The cheesecake is done baking, and I have to go get changed now. See you later.

There are several options: either you buy a standalone thread stand and place it behind the machine, as I do when sewing with cones, or you cobble something together yourself. If you still have any containers from blank CDs, you can use them and fill the “pot” with some bird sand for stability, then screw the part with the spindle on top. Or you can see whether you have the casing of an old ballpoint pen or felt-tip pen lying around somewhere, clean it and put it on your sewing machine’s thread holder. That works quite well too; I’ve done it before. That way the cone has some support upwards and doesn’t wobble around so much.
