how are things shaping up this year for school enrollment, the start of school, and the start of kindergarten?

As far as I know, this year it’s planned to be as usual. In schools and daycare centers, almost all restrictions due to coronavirus are already being lifted. And if some new variant doesn’t throw a wrench in the works, things will probably be fairly normal.

For all children starting school, the first day of school is of course a very special event that should definitely be celebrated properly. That naturally includes the obligatory school cone, which is often made in kindergarten.

And what should go inside? It shouldn’t be just sweets, and pencils and erasers are usually already in the pencil cases, whose contents are often specified by the schools.

How about a little guardian angel as a bag charm, meant to protect the child on the way to school?
I have a version here for girls and one for boys. The guardian angel is a little rascal (or a little girl rascal), looks very much like a schoolchild, so the child can really identify with it. Only the little wings and the unusual hair color set it apart from a human child. The little angel also has a small school cone in its arm and a school satchel on its back that can be opened to tuck in a few coins, Mom’s phone number, or a little encouraging message.

Pencil toppers are also very popular with children starting school. Here’s a version for the start of school: schoolchildren with a teacher. If you like, you can make a child look similar to the child starting school (hair color, hairstyle, maybe glasses, etc.)

Well, I also hope that everything will go back to normal this year. It’s sad when you can’t celebrate the first day of school.

I’d like to suggest the ABC school cones. They’re perfect as a small gift, even for siblings who’d like to have a little treat on that day too.

My younger daughter is starting school this year. The enrollment ceremony will likely take place without COVID-19 restrictions, especially since it will be summer and measures have been more relaxed in the past. However, the first day of school in Switzerland isn’t celebrated nearly as much as it is in Germany. In our town, parents of first-graders are allowed to accompany their children into the classroom in the morning. The children color a postcard, which is then tied to an inflated balloon. All schoolchildren and kindergarteners gather with their parents at 9 a.m. in the playground and release the balloons all at once. It’s a wonderful sight when the sky is filled with colorful balloons :-) Afterward, the parents are invited for coffee and a slice of braided bread, while the children head back to school or kindergarten. That’s it. We don’t have big celebrations with godparents and grandparents here. There isn’t even a “Schultüte” (school cone)—except at our house, of course; as a German mom, that’s just part of the tradition for me ;-)

For the first day of school or the start of kindergarten, I have two gym bags to suggest—they can be personalized and will be a long-lasting companion for the child. The gym bags are knitted using the double-face technique, which makes them sturdy and ensures there are no annoying loose threads on the inside. The bottom of the gym bag is crocheted in the round.

My grandchildren are in first and second grade, respectively, and are taught at home. We all hope that Corona disappears, preferably overnight.

Oh, these are lovely ideas. And kindergarten or school enrollment is celebrated differently in every country. But you always have a little influence. After all, it should be a special day in the child’s life.

I can say from the daycare days of my children and grandchildren that they like to take little bags with personal things. Simply a place for small things you might want to quickly take along. For example, in this bag here:

It is just the right size for children’s hands, has a sturdy base, wide handles, and an extra side pocket. It is very easy to crochet. Even beginners can manage it.



In the bag, you could take along newly crocheted doll clothes for a special occasion, for example. The dolls at daycare and the little doll moms will surely be happy about the additions. Just crochet a few things in advance and send them along. I know from experience that they are always gladly accepted. I always like to use bright colors for this, because children like them so much. The clothing has securely sewn-on snaps, so children’s hands can fasten and unfasten them easily.

Here is another idea for functional decor for daycare or for a child’s room at home. Little girls have hair clips, ponytail holders, and their first plastic jewelry. Things can easily get lost in the bustle. For this purpose, you can crochet a hanging storage basket. All the found treasures can be put in and attached there. That way every child can always find her treasures again, or even have a “jewelry party” with a friend. Little girls love that.
