Crocheting a basketweave pattern

What is a basketweave pattern, and what can you do with it?

the basketweave pattern—some call it that, others call it a relief pattern. I imagine you’re referring to this pattern here: You’ll have to look past the flowers a bit to spot it. I crocheted this little basket back in 2013—it’s a good thing my computer remembers everything. It’s made using relief stitches, where you insert the hook sometimes from the front and sometimes from the back. The result is a pattern that looks just like woven basketwork. The pattern has a somewhat rustic look overall because of the raised and recessed texture, and it also uses up a lot of yarn.

Oh, I see—it’s nothing new, just a new name for a relief stitch.

Well, there are other relief patterns that don’t look like a basket weave.

And aren’t relief patterns only made with double crochet?

Well, there are probably a few hundred relief patterns out there :-))
And yes, they work with all known stitch types (except slip stitches, which are too flat).

But basketweave patterns don’t necessarily have to consist of relief stitches. The one shown by Ina is one of the best-known, but you can design basketweave patterns simply by inserting the hook into the “front” or “back” loop of the stitch.

And even post double crochets can be worked “across” or diagonally and layered on top of each other, creating pretty basketweave patterns. So it’s just like weaving a basket from rattan ;-) Lots and lots of possibilities :-)
