Pullover Sewing Pattern / Hoodie Sewing Pattern: What Should You Pay Attention To?

what should you pay attention to if you want to make a sewing pattern for a pullover / sewing pattern for a hoodie?

well, first of all, I’d definitely pay close attention to the fabric recommendations: Is the pattern suitable for jersey, sweatshirt fabric, or summer sweatshirt fabric?

These fabrics stretch to different degrees, so it’s important to follow the instructions in the pattern.

Next, it helps to check the size chart to figure out which size to cut. I’ve made that beginner’s mistake myself—I just went with my usual store size, which ended up with a sweater that was too small—and that’s such a waste of fabric!

Women with a larger bust in particular should measure carefully and, when in doubt, go up a size. For hoodies, I now always sew one size larger so I can comfortably wear a T-shirt underneath without it feeling tight around the chest and shoulders.

If your measurements vary—for example, a size 40 on top and a 38 from the waist down (which is usually the case for me)—you can adjust the pattern yourself and have the size 40 line gently taper into a 38 from the top. With a hoodie, even a beginner can easily give this a try ;). For elegant evening wear, this kind of adjustment requires a bit more work.

In any case, a sweater, shirt, or sweatshirt should be sewn with an overlock machine; if one isn’t available, then use a triple zigzag stitch, because with stretchy fabrics, the seams should also be elastic—otherwise, you’ll eventually end up with *air holes* ;-) in the seams, since a regular straight stitch unfortunately doesn’t stretch enough in this case.
