Dear users, dear authors,
How do you knit garter stitch and what is it used for?

@Authors,
if you’d like, you can also share relevant patterns here in this discussion thread.

Dear Josefa,
Garter stitch is a great pattern for beginners because you only knit every row—both right-side and wrong-side rows. Beginners usually find knit stitches easier than purl stitches.

This pattern is also called garter stitch, simply because you only knit.
Here are a few examples to illustrate. You can achieve particularly beautiful results with gradient yarns, different types of yarn, or leftover yarn.

This stitch pattern also doesn’t stretch out as much because the garter ridges hold it together well. This means that the finished piece usually turns out a bit thicker than, say, one knitted in stockinette stitch. And you’ll need more yarn, too. I really enjoy knitting it to use up leftover yarn. You can even knit it while watching TV.

Best regards, Ina

I can only agree with Ina—garter stitch is probably the easiest knitting pattern in the world. My first knitting project in third grade was a scarf in garter stitch (even though it’s so easy to knit, my mom had to finish the scarf back then. She got a straight A for it :-) ).

Garter stitch is also great for edging, hems, or borders on a stockinette-stitch piece. With stockinette stitch, the edge tends to curl; garter stitch helps prevent that curling.

And you can also use garter stitch to create beautiful patterns on a stockinette-stitch background. Unlike other knitting techniques where this is possible (e.g., double-face or jacquard knitting), even beginners can master this.

Here are a few examples:

Best regards
Sonja

A garter-stitch cowl for a cyclist who likes to ride his bike even in cold weather
then, for me, a blanket to cover my legs, knitted diagonally, also in garter stitch from leftover yarn

My soul warmer from recently, also knitted in garter stitch, wonderfully warm

Using garter stitch, you can easily create beautiful patterns in your knitting.
Even beginners will find this easy, and the results look really impressive.

Take my “Starry Sky” baby blanket, for example:

I can confirm all of this and use these techniques myself. For example, the garter stitch pattern in this little pinafore dress.

I also like to use garter stitch for the cuffs on jackets. That way, you don’t have to knit them on later, and the jacket holds its shape well. In the following example, the top button placket and the cuffs on the sleeves and legs are all knitted in garter stitch.

I often use garter stitch to start a knitted triangular shawl.

My current triangular shawl also includes garter stitch in its pattern.

So, I’m actually knitting garter stitch right now with my fluffy yarn. These stitches are easy to knit, and it’s still fluffy.

So what is seed stitch, then? Alternating knit and purl stitches, but offset?

Exactly, Andrea—the seed stitch involves alternating knit and purl stitches. It’s usually worked with an odd number of stitches so that the wrong side row can also begin with a knit stitch.

Andrea, in the bunny dishcloth you can see both nicely. The small seed stitch is used as the border, and the bunny motif is knitted in garter stitch.
