Knitting a rounded bottom

Good morning, everyone!

I’m totally hooked on knitting right now and am finally learning how to “knit properly” 😉
Now I’ve decided to knit something from the top down that’s supposed to be rounded at the bottom.
Since I’ve never done anything like this before—of course 😜—I’m still figuring it out.
Does this work with short rows? (I’ve knitted those before, too, but it doesn’t look that hard…)

I’d love to hear your expert advice 😀

Best wishes—Nina

Hi Nina,
I’d also say that this can only be done with short rows.
BUT: I’m also currently knitting a sweater that involves incorporating short rows. When I knit the piece in rounds, there’s always one tricky spot for me: I knit the short rows—everything’s easy, with nice transitions at the turns. But when I continue working in the round, there’s always a hole in the first round right where I knit over the last turn! Always! I’ve tried different methods—double stitches, yarn overs, everything I could think of—but nothing has helped; there’s always a HOLE! So I gave up and left out the short rows.
Strangely enough, I’ve never had this problem with socks! Only with sweaters... I just don’t get it!
So if anyone has any idea what might be causing this and how to fix it—I’d be really happy!
Best regards,
Annette

Hey there.....
Rounded at the bottom.... do you mean waves?

At the point that’s supposed to be the “widest,” you’d have a center stitch, increase one stitch on either side of it, and where the wave is deepest, decrease one stitch on each side....
Otherwise, it actually works with short rows... pull the turning stitch really tight and, when knitting across it, knit into both legs. So, for a double stitch, knit into both legs, and for a wrapped stitch, knit the wrap as well.
I usually only have problems with holes when I’m supposed to purl the stitch....

Thank you so much for your detailed answers.
@Annette: I knit in rows, so hopefully I won’t run into the “hole problem.”

I’m just going to give it a try now. The worst that can happen is having to unravel it 😂

If you’re knitting in rows, you can decrease on both sides.
So, for example, decrease 10 stitches on the left and right, then decrease more stitches as needed.
Sketch it out for yourself, including the width and decreases. You’d then knit over those decreases afterward so it looks neat.
Basically, it’s exactly the same as crocheting.
