Granny

Hi, I’ve been seeing knitting patterns for a “granny” quite often lately.
What is a “granny”?
I’d appreciate some clarification!

Hello Irmi.

A granny is a crocheted square, but you can also crochet a triangular shawl in granny style.

The word comes from the English “granny” - grandmother, because in the “good old days” grandmas often crocheted blankets or shawls from individual squares.

Today, now that crocheting is definitely no longer just an evening pastime for grandmas, grannies are finding all kinds of new uses. For example as a tunic or a poncho.

Google “Granny Square”; you’ll find lots of pictures there.
