Crochet Cast-On

Dear knitting pros,
could you please explain to me what the advantage of crochet cast-on stitches is!?
Does it make the fabric extra stretchy?
Or is it just a good way to avoid miscounting when casting on?
Or, or, or?!

Thanks 😘

Does anyone else have anything to add?

I’m not familiar with this technique and couldn’t find anything about it online either. I was hoping the experts here might know something about it. I’m curious.....

I searched for it on YT and watched a video about it. I haven’t done it that way myself yet; the idea is probably to make it looser. But you can achieve that in other ways too, namely by knitting on the stitches to the left or right. Garnstudio has good videos for that.

From what I saw, I’d find that much too cumbersome.

It sounds to me like a provisional cast-on—could that be right?
You crochet a chain of chain stitches in a different color and knit the stitches into that chain. The purpose of this is so that you can carefully unravel the chain later and slip the individual stitches back onto the knitting needle—for example, to knit the beginning and end together or to knit a cuff or something similar there.

Yeah, exactly—that’s how I’ve always done it too, and I did it that way for a pair of leggings, for example. But in the video I found, the cast-on was crocheted around a knitting needle. I’m not sure if that really makes sense.

I’ve also looked into that knitting needle technique before. I’m planning a project that is meant to be bound off at the end using a 3-needle bind-off. But I haven’t practiced it yet—I have so many projects in progress that this interesting new one will have to wait.

Hello everyone....
Well, when I have to “fiddle around” with a provisional cast-on, I always use a foundation chain—that’s the fastest way for me. Just make sure to knit the stitches from the back of the chain.
I haven’t tried this as a “regular” cast-on yet; maybe it’s just a matter of appearance, how the cast-on looks later on. There are whole books about casting on and binding off, after all....

I cast on the stitches with knitting needles.
I haven’t come across the crochet-on cast-on method yet.
