Neckline too wide

Hi there,
I hope you can help me. I’m currently crocheting a sweater for my husband.
Everything’s fine, but the neckline is too wide—it looks kind of weird...
Do you have any ideas on how I can make it smaller?
Maybe slip stitches, then a few rows of single crochet and some decreases?
Or just sew it closed a bit from the shoulders?

I’d do it just like you described. Which stitches you use depends on the stitch pattern of the sweater.
Maybe post double crochet stitches would work, too—then you could crochet a ribbed edge.

Hi Michaela! Thanks for your reply. The sweater is made entirely of double crochets.
I could actually work a row of slip stitches and post double crochets…
But I need to decrease after the slip stitches, right? But by how much, or at what stitch count—for example, every 4th stitch??!

Did you work the sweater as a top-down raglan or from the bottom up?

I wouldn’t use slip stitches—they have no elasticity at all—but would start with half double crochet stitches right away, decreasing in the first round depending on the number of stitches, as you described.
Then work two or three rounds of half double crochet post stitches, depending on how “high” you want the collar to be.

Okay, I just don’t want to decrease too much.
You never know beforehand how much tighter it’ll get, right?

I always have trouble with decreases on the sleeves, too.
