Dividing a sewing pattern

Hello everyone :)

My sewing skills are getting “better” and I now make lots of simple pieces of clothing. Mostly children’s shirts and pants, but I’ve also made men’s T-shirts. So far everything has always been relatively plain and simple...

But now I’d like to make myself a T-shirt from 2 fabrics. One solid-colored and one patterned.
The back should be patterned, and part of the front. (The sleeves are attached directly to the front and back)

Can I simply “cut through” the sewing pattern wherever I feel like and cut the fabrics separately with the appropriate seam allowance?
What do I need to keep in mind when dividing it? Would you do a horizontal cut to start with, or something round/diagonal/... ?
Are there any tips for dividing it, like where to place the seams so it doesn’t look silly? e.g., definitely not over the bust or something?

Thanks for your tips :)

You can actually split it however you like, but you’ll need to keep the seam allowance in mind and, most importantly, make sure all the fabrics are aligned with the grain or stitch direction—otherwise, you’ll end up with unsightly bulges when you wear it.
So get to work on the fabric and go for it—my teacher always told us when we were hesitant: “Go for it—the worst that can happen is that it goes wrong!” ;-) :-)

Best regards, Inge

Thanks for your reply.

In that case, I’ll just start cutting it up tonight and see what happens :)
It’ll probably turn out okay :D
