Bowl Covers

I sewed myself some bowl covers, so I can save on plastic wrap and such; you can find the sewing pattern on YouTube
search for bowl cover. The white multicolored fabric is the underside of the cover, and the solid-colored fabric is on top

What kind of fabric is that?

The top is made of cotton fabric, very simple, and for the underside I used coated cotton so you can wipe it down if anything gets on it. If you have trouble finding coated cotton, I have a tip for you, because I use these too: buy those coated tablecloths, which are available cheaply at discount stores, and the material is great for things like this

Best regards, Inge

If you use coated tablecloths, doesn’t the coating end up in the food?

No, it doesn’t—after all, we have those coated tablecloths in the kitchen too, and people eat on them and so on. I’ve never heard that it’s harmful, and it wouldn’t be allowed anymore anyway.

Don’t you like those beeswax wraps? You could use those, too.

I haven't sewn these yet and don't know how they'll behave in the sewing machine, so I can't really say much about them.

Hi!
You can also sew great reusable sandwich bags out of coated tablecloths. I’ve made quite a few of those myself.

@Inge: You can easily make your own beeswax wraps “after the fact”:
first, sew whatever shape you want out of cotton fabric, and then use a plane or grater to shave beeswax (from a candle or a crumpled wax block) over it (just like grating fresh Parmesan over pasta). Then either melt it in the oven at a low temperature (CAUTION: be sure to place a large piece of parchment paper underneath!) or iron it with parchment paper on top and underneath.
Then check to see if the entire piece of fabric is “sealed”; if not, fill in any gaps.

Sew the finished beeswax cloth with parchment paper on top and underneath, and it’s best to use a “non-stick” sewing needle.

Best regards, Nina

I sewed mine entirely out of fabric (the bunny-patterned fabric was from old pajamas, and the second layer was from an old tablecloth). Since I only need it for covering and it stays on for at most one day, I’m very happy with my solution.
