Weights When Cutting

we recently already had the topic of my homemade weights for cutting jersey fabrics; today I’m cutting out a shirt and thought I’d show you how. The pattern is made from very thin plastic film; if you look closely you can see it, because it’s labeled, which is always an advantage if you want to use it again later and know which one it is.

Best, Inge

This is the first time I’ve seen your weights—I must have missed that post.

Do you place them on the fabric and the sewing pattern so nothing slips? I always pin my sewing pattern to the fabric with pins and then cut it out. Is that the same thing, or why use the weights?

Yes, I lay the fabric down first and then place the pattern on top of the fabric, and that’s when I add the weights. The weights prevent the jersey from getting pinholes, especially since it’s quite delicate—which is the case with viscose jersey. Plus, when pinning the pattern, it sometimes slips because it’s so smooth, so I just place weights on top; that way, it stays exactly where I put it and I don’t have to readjust it.

Best regards, Inge

Thanks. Learned something new again. I mostly sew small items out of cotton or denim. But even then, you can sometimes see the pin pricks. I didn’t know there were weights you could place on top.

Yours look great, by the way.
