I’ve recently started crocheting amigurumi for my 3.5-year-old son. He loves them. I’m currently crocheting a little bear, and before I start decreasing for the head, I wanted to make the eyes.
What do you suggest? I can’t buy eyes right now.
Thank you so much for your replies and, if available, any free patterns.
There are quite a few options.
For a 3-year-old, for example, googly eyes are an option. They also start at €1, but of course they can come off sometimes.
Otherwise:
- embroider them
- crochet eyes and sew them on (e.g. 6 single crochets in a magic ring)
- cut them out of felt and sew or glue them on
- sew on buttons
Personally, I think crocheted eyes are the prettiest—the only exceptions are actual stuffed-animal eyes.
Everything else, in my opinion—though everyone sees it differently—looks a bit “tacked on” or half-hearted.
I’d crochet a circle using single crochet or half double crochet and place a little black knot stitch or a black bead in the center as the pupil if it’s a little bear. If it’s bigger, I’d first crochet a black round and then crochet white around it.
I’d crochet the eyes, too.
I find embroidering them very difficult—I tried it on my last three teddy bears using satin stitch, and it took almost longer to get it even than it did to crochet the whole animal....
When crocheting, I always make three eyes and choose the two that look the most alike.
