Hi everyone,
I just received a message with the following content. I was planning to buy the pattern too, but now?!?! If I had bought it, what would I do?
Message:
I saw in the comments that you also bought the elephant, or rather the pattern. Did you also notice that the pattern for the legs and ears isn’t included at all, and that some rows aren’t listed either? How are you supposed to crochet them?
Example:
Round 3: 2 sc in every 4th stitch = 15 stitches
Round 7: 2 sc in every 5th stitch = 18 stitches
Round 16: 2 sc in every 6th stitch = 21 stitches
Round 19: 2 sc in every 7th stitch = 24 stitches
It also doesn’t say whether these are spiral or closed rounds. Hmm, as a beginner, I find this pretty confusing. I can’t crochet the legs and ears from memory. How did you solve this problem? The sellers aren’t answering me.
The fact that some rounds aren’t listed means to me that, for example, rounds 4–6 are crocheted with 15 stitches, then rounds 8–15 with 18 stitches, and so on. I’ve seen this in patterns from well-known publishers as well.
Of course, it’s not acceptable that the ears and legs are missing, and they absolutely need to be added. Why don’t you suggest to the writer that she leave a comment about this in the pattern? The seller will most likely respond then. If that doesn’t help, she can also contact Crazypatterns. However, keep in mind that not all sellers are constantly at their computers; the seller might not have time until the evening because she has another job during the day.
However, I would like to see, for example, a note in the introduction stating that unless otherwise specified, the stitches should be crocheted as they appear—meaning no increases or decreases. Without that note, I don’t think that’s good.
The fact that the shown pieces aren’t part of the pattern is completely unacceptable—unless that’s explicitly stated in the product description. Even then, I’d still find it questionable... But I suspect that these body parts were perhaps simply forgotten during the “convert Word to PDF” process. If that were the case, the error would be easy to fix.
I’d also give the seller 1–2–3 days at most to respond. If you don’t hear anything by then, I’d inform crazypatterns.
So I think it’s highly unlikely that sections were left out during the conversion to PDF format. Unless it’s a poor-quality converter that requires you to convert each page individually. Normally, the entire document is converted in one go, so the relevant sections must have been missing from the start. It also helps the creator of a pattern to explain the individual parts in separate sections and to provide each section with headings. That way, you can set all the headings first and then fill them with content, so nothing gets left out.
As for the missing rounds: The fact that rounds are omitted even in patterns from well-known publishers doesn’t make it any better, in my opinion. Anyone writing for beginners should mention every stitch. Or else not label the pattern as suitable for beginners. I also find the row instructions provided insufficient. Doubling every few stitches is fine, but what about the rest? To me, “suitable for beginners” means that every stitch (including the repetition from the previous round) is mentioned, for example like this:
Round 7: 3 times (4 single crochets, 2 single crochets in the next stitch) (Abbreviated form: 3x (4 sc, 2 sc in the next st))
Round 8: 1 single crochet in each stitch (Abbreviated form: 1 sc in each st)
That’s not entirely true—unfortunately, I’ve also had the problem where a pattern wasn’t saved completely, even though I have a good program. It could have been a glitch with the computer. I did notice it in time, though :-)
I mentioned the well-known publishers because I often find the patterns there very sparse, even though they’re bought tens of thousands of times! I also think everything should be described clearly.
But as always: mistakes can happen to any of us. And likewise, sometimes you’re so used to a routine that you assume others have (or can have) the same knowledge :-) That’s why there are plenty of ways here to contact the seller directly so they can make corrections.
