Category suggestion: Downloadable craft book

but I’m not sure how it will be received

I was just putting together a reply, and that’s when this occurred to me
but I didn’t want to put it in that thread,
because it might otherwise get lost
so I’m starting a new thread

would it be possible for sellers
who would also like to make a proper ebook
that includes not just one pattern
but several patterns, background info, etc.
structured like a craft book or non-fiction book
to list and sell it here on Crazypatterns?
Maybe even a small category of its own for that?
There probably won’t be that many books,
since it takes a long time to work on something like that until it’s finished
and you have to have the time for it
but it would be a nice addition to the range here on Crazypatterns
and good, useful information always finds buyers

As far as I’ve noticed, many sellers dream of publishing their own book
but finding a publisher, etc. can take a while
but if you could publish it here on Crazypattens
that would be practical, because the “route” is quite short and there are few time-consuming intermediate steps
and you’re constantly in contact with the buyers anyway
and it’s also a great feeling to have made a proper ebook.

And the “market”, or rather the demand, for craft books is definitely there
there is always a need for things worth reading

So, they don’t have to be 300-page books
but, for example, the basics of crochet, the most important techniques and tips and tricks from a pro for beginners,
could definitely be covered well in 20 pages of text, plus a few nice pictures (possibly with help from a professional)
have it proofread
and then put it in the shop

or Crochet for Advanced Crocheters
Everything about crocheting amigurumis, including tips and tricks

Sewing Bags for Beginners
Sewing Bags for Advanced Sewers etc. etc.
there are lots of topics
that could be covered nicely in 20 pages of text with some nice photos to go with them

 

I think the problem will be the price, not whether we can put together enough content.

If I imagine making a book called “Bags for Beginners,” I’d need 4–5 designs, detailed patterns, and sewing patterns. I’d guess that easily adds up to 50–70 pages. (Unfortunately, you can’t condense the sewing patterns onto a single large sewing pattern sheet, as is done in books.) How much would a customer be willing to pay, considering they’d also have to print out all those pages? You know yourself that buyers here already consider patterns priced at more than 3–5 euros to be overpriced.  So, can you sell enough copies to make the effort worthwhile, even for just a few euros? Or is it better to split them up after all?

I’d rather split them up and then describe the more difficult steps in detail in the respective patterns—with photos and text—and, for sewing patterns, the entire process.
 

In principle, it’s certainly doable and quite a good idea, I think.
After all, the actual work has already been done with your individual pieces. I’d therefore see a book as a kind of pattern collection in which I could save myself the fairly detailed introduction for each pattern, while still briefly explaining the most important basic terms. That would only be a one-time effort and could then continue to be used universally.
Of course, it’s clear that you would have to or should offer a certain “bulk discount.”
Interesting idea

Opening a category is the smallest problem. As soon as someone wants to publish an entire book, they’re welcome to get in touch—by email or via PM. The category can be set up within one business day. We’re currently restructuring the categories. Afterward, it should be easier to assign patterns to specific categories. For now, feel free to upload the books to the “… Other” category. For example, if it’s about amigurumi, put it in “Amigurumi -> Other Amigurumi.” As soon as patterns on a specific topic start to accumulate, a category will be created automatically.
