How do you celebrate the first Sunday of Advent and St. Nicholas Day?

How do you celebrate the first Sunday of Advent, the other Sundays of Advent, and St. Nicholas Day?

Not at all this year, since the pandemic has really put a damper on the festivities. We can’t visit family, so the two of us are staying home alone and having a quiet evening. Christmas will likely be much the same. Here in our city, the numbers are rising faster than you can say “Amen,” so caution and restraint are called for, no matter how hard it may be :-( :-(

I’ll start digging out the Christmas decorations sometime in mid- to late November, and then I’ll get or make a nice Advent wreath.

We’ll just “celebrate” these days cozily at home.

Just like any other Sunday. Only with the appropriate decorations 😊

We didn’t have a normal Christmas last year (due to a family member’s illness), so I want to at least make it nice this year. Even if it’s just with a very small group 😊

I’m waiting to see. Ideally, I’d like to do it the same way as always—I’m a creature of habit.

But nothing is certain right now. At the moment, our family is being very cautious. My son is in quarantine, and my mother-in-law is a high-risk patient. How are we supposed to plan anything and make everyone happy—that is, spend time together in a relaxed way? 

Like every year, we’re both home alone—with one exception: no children or parents are coming to visit us.
Still, I’m going to put up a few Christmas decorations. For just the two of us, we don’t need a big Christmas tree—a small artificial one will do. Time to decorate: ornaments, and instead of tinsel, those red bead chains. I’ll set out my little crocheted Christmas doll. I need colorful lights everywhere—on the little tree and in the window—and that’s it.
Let’s see what delicious food we’ll have—maybe turkey with dumplings and red cabbage, or lasagna; we haven’t decided yet. My husband is on vacation, and I’m home anyway because of reduced work hours, so we’ll have a nice, cozy evening watching TV.
Christmas is such an emotional time again—Christmas carols, loved ones far away—it brings tears to my eyes all over again. Whether we like it or not, we all just have to deal with it, even if it’s hard.
