Soft Yarn

Hi everyone :)
I started my business two years ago and have actually been selling quite well. I crochet headbands.
However, I’m facing a dilemma: I crochet with acrylic yarn. The reason is that I’m vegan myself and don’t want to use animal-based wool. But acrylic yarn isn’t exactly great either. I’m really torn here. Would you buy items made with acrylic yarn? Do you have any recommendations for a really soft cotton yarn?
Thanks in advance. I’m really at my wits’ end...

Hi, I’m more of a fan of cotton and merino. I rarely use acrylic because I often find that it crackles (though maybe it’s just me who hears or feels it).

But there’s also acrylic yarn that’s great for knitting, and I do use that too. If there’s a bit of acrylic in it, it’s often easier to care for. Right now, I have some 100% acrylic yarn that I bought many years ago, and I’m knitting a scarf with it. It feels really great—it’s super soft and totally comfortable.

When we were in America, I noticed that almost everything there is made of acrylic.

If you’ve been happy and successful with it so far, why do you want to switch?

Hi Lena,

I usually work with a cotton-acrylic blend.
I haven’t come across any pure cotton that’s soft yet.

Right now, I’m knitting a soul warmer out of pure acrylic.

I wouldn’t switch either.

Good morning....

I’d try a cotton/bamboo blend...
It’s great to knit with, and I find it really comfortable to wear. Maybe you could try it 😇 Personally, I only use acrylic for items that need to go in the wash frequently, like cat blankets and pillows...

Best regards, Stephanie

Hello, fellow crocheter,
no, personally I wouldn’t buy acrylic (anymore), since it’s ultimately “just plastic.” Because of the environmental impact and also a possible effect on the human body, I try to avoid plastic in anything that comes into contact with the skin.
There are plenty of alternatives, after all: cotton, bamboo as already mentioned, and I recently saw that there’s yarn with soy, as well as with modal or viscose.
There’s also yarn with GOTS certification, e.g. my absolute favorite, Rosy Greenwool. Some types of wool even support endangered sheep breeds. And organic merino wool is machine-washable, very soft and comfortable, and works up wonderfully.
Warmest regards!
