Hi everyone,
I urgently need knitting instructions or a crochet pattern for a large dog sweater (approx. 40 kg).
The Beany is exactly Oggy’s style—but unfortunately, it’s way too small.
Oggy needs winter protection right where all dog coats stop:
his belly, around his private parts, and the top of his thighs.
That’s where he has nothing—except his bare skin.
Unfortunately, I can’t help you with that. I knit sweaters for our Flocke myself, but I always take her measurements, so I don’t have a pattern.
Have you ever knitted a sweater for Oggy before? If so, you already have a pattern that you can lengthen as you like, so that his “private parts” aren’t exposed to the cold.
Hi Oggy, I don’t know much about dogs, but here’s what I’d do.
Measure the dog’s back length and its belly circumference.
Using thick needles and thick (real) wool, simply knit in 2x ribbing: 2 purl stitches, 2 knit stitches.
Cast on enough stitches for the required length from the shoulder to the rear end?
You knit, and when you need openings for the legs, simply bind off several stitches, so you’ll have openings at first. Knit several rows until the leg fits through,
basically like a large buttonhole.
If the garment fits all the way around, it should close at the back.
To do this, it’s best to knit small buttonholes again and sew on the buttons so that the bottom part still covers the body (overlap\/underlap).
This means that when you close it, no opening or gap forms. You can imagine it like a cardigan with buttons.
I hope this helps somewhat.
Best regards
Serap
Hi Michaela,
hi Serap,
thank you both very much for your kind help.
Unfortunately, the last time I knitted was ages ago, and I’m totally out of practice when it comes to tackling this with the kind of skill you both have (knitting without precise instructions or a pattern). But if no one else comes forward who might just happen to have a knitting pattern like that, then I’ll ask my mom. She’s more likely to be able to put your tips into practice.
Thanks again so much, and have a wonderful weekend!
Hello Mino’s owner,
thank you for your tip. The dog sweaters really are cute. Unfortunately, they’re not quite what I’m looking for.
I need something for Oggy that also covers his upper hind legs and his belly,
so that really only his private parts are showing.
... and much bigger, for a 40 kg dog.
There is something like what I’m looking for in a smaller size.
But I have so little experience with knitting, etc., that I can’t enlarge this pattern
to include everything that goes with it.

I guess I’ll have to keep looking. But THANK YOU anyway!
