Sewing supply organizers

This morning I sewed these two sewing supply organizers—the filled one is mine, and the small one is for my 10-year-old granddaughter. She’s been sewing since she was 7 and really enjoys it.
I always start with little projects like this after I recover; if they turn out well ;-) I know I’m finally over this cold ;-) :-)

That’s a great fabric. 

For the lower storage basket: did you sew it with two layers of fabric? Is it padded with batting?

Yes, I used lining fabric and outer fabric, and I ironed on a lightweight batting to give the whole thing a bit of structure,

Do you sew both layers the same size—using the same pattern piece—or does the outer layer have to be bigger?

Yes, all the layers are the same size, which ensures that all the layers are stitched together.
