Crocheting a Carnival Costume

Hi everyone,

I’m thinking about crocheting a little Carnival costume for my daughter. Not a full outfit, of course—more like some accessories.

I’m thinking of getting her a yellow shirt and some yellow tights. And to complete the sun costume, I was thinking of making a crocheted yellow headband and crocheting these sun rays onto it. But I’m wondering—how will the rays stay in place? Is stuffing them the right way to go?

Do you maybe have any other ideas?

It’s just supposed to be a light costume for daycare.

I think you could crochet a crown like this in yellow. Then it would be perfect for a sun costume.

Hi Dejm,

if you keep the rays fairly short and on the thicker side, firm stuffing might be enough. Otherwise, you could work pipe cleaners into the filling for reinforcement, or maybe popsicle sticks (though it’s questionable how washable that would be).
If you want the rays to be thinner, you can also crochet directly around the pipe cleaner. I’d recommend doubling or tripling the pipe cleaner strands beforehand and twisting them together to make it sturdier. The wire inside is usually pretty thin, after all.
