Dear users, dear authors,
how do you do this, and why do you do it?

Hello, everyone. I’m a big fan of filet crochet. It only really comes into its own when you block it. There are professional blocking mats and special blocking pins, but I can’t speak to those—I block my pieces according to my grandma’s method, using a thick blanket as a base and lots of regular pins. The piece you’re blocking should be slightly damp. It also helps to spray on a little starch after pinning it out. Then, depending on the yarn used, iron it at the appropriate temperature and let it sit that way until the next day. The next day, remove the pins and enjoy your beautiful work.

I don’t use professional pattern boards either. I find basting pins unnecessary, since regular pins work just as well. But I’ve since switched to the ones with colorful heads because they’re easier on the fingers. For a base, I use Styrofoam sheets with a towel or bedsheet laid on top—depending on the size of the piece. I pin the fabric in place while it’s dry and then spray it with starch (more or less, depending on the intended use).
I don’t iron the finished piece because I prefer it to have a more three-dimensional look.

My mattress doubles as a blocking surface.
To pin things down, I also use pins with colorful heads.
They have the advantage of being easier to see.

Hey there....
I knitted a lot of lace for quite a while.... blocking is very important for that, so the pattern shows up well...
For this, I made myself a huge board with a self-adhesive sleeping mat. I then blocked shawls and the like with blocking wires and fixed them in place with just pins. The advantage of the wires is that you get very even tension, and even semicircular shawls can be shaped perfectly thanks to the flexible wires...  And the board can simply be leaned against the wall, so it’s not in the way and the blocked piece can dry undisturbed...
