Dyeing Wool

Dear users and authors,
do you have any tips and tricks for dyeing wool?

I’ll definitely leave that to those who know what they’re doing. I’d be devastated if a finished knitted piece just ran its color when washed or if the colors faded super fast as soon as they saw the sun. 

Dyeing wool is one of the easiest things there is—I’ve done it many times, using solar dyeing to color raw wool and then working with it. I think I’ve written about this topic here before, but I can’t find the post right now—maybe Josefa knows where it’s hiding

But I admire anyone who can dye such beautiful color gradients. A shawl couldn’t be any more unique.

Hi everyone,

Dyeing wool with food coloring is super easy.
Dissolve the food coloring in water with plenty of vinegar (like the Easter dye tablets, which work great too), and then dye the wool in the solution however you like.
Afterward, wrap the skein of wool in plastic wrap and set the color by heating it in the oven or—which is much faster—in the microwave.
Then rinse out the excess dye and let the wool dry.
It’s really super easy—just be careful not to burn your fingers on the hot, heat-set wool ;)
