Crossed double crochet

What are crossed double crochet stitches and what are they used for?

Hello Josefa,
these are 2 treble crochets that share a common center, so that they form an X.
You can use them to crochet beautiful lace patterns. A row of crossed stitches is reminiscent of an embroidered openwork seam.

Can beginners do this, too?

This might be too complicated for absolute beginners, but a slightly more experienced beginner can certainly give it a try. Double crochet stitches, however, shouldn’t be a problem, and it’s recommended to start by crocheting a small test piece with thick yarn to understand and practice this technique.

You can crochet cables with crossed double crochet stitches. In knitting, you’re familiar with this from using a cable needle.

I bought a great book with lots of patterns using crossed double crochet stitches, and I’ve already crocheted a sample, but I found it very time-consuming and also tiring to make sure my pattern turned out right in the end. 

Are crossed double crochet stitches the only way to crochet cables?

When I think of cables, crossed double crochets come to mind.
Don’t confuse them with cross double crochets.

Cross double crochets look like large Xs because of the two chain stitches in between, while crossed double crochets look like narrow Xs.

Oh. So there are differences? Sorry. Then I’ll have to look it up online tonight.
