Owl Scarf

Hello,
I purchased the pattern for the owl scarf. The owl turned out great, but I don’t understand how to properly transfer the stitches to one needle. According to the instructions, the work should first be folded as shown in the illustration, and then one stitch from each of needles 1 and 4 should be slipped onto the right needle. One stitch from the front needle and one stitch from the back needle, alternating until all 42 stitches are on the right needle.
My question: Once I’ve transferred the stitches from needles 1 and 4 to the right needle, what happens to needles 2 and 3, and which needle is meant by “right needle”? I’m having a bit of trouble understanding this. Can anyone help me out?

thank you so much for your reply. In the meantime, I’ve managed to understand the knitting pattern correctly, and I’ve successfully transferred the stitches from the set of double-pointed needles to a single needle just as it should be. It’s a great technique, and it looks fantastic!
