Absolutely, dear Josefa. For me, crafts are pure relaxation. After stressful days, I always think, “Time for some relaxing crocheting or knitting.” The repetitive motions automatically put me in relaxation mode. I don’t need anything else.
I feel the same way as Schnuckelina. After a stressful day, there’s nothing better than sitting there with a
cup of coffee and crocheting. It totally relaxes me.
oh yes, crafting is pure mental relaxation; it lets you switch off and wind down so wonderfully. Especially when I'm English paper piecing, I don't hear or see anything anymore
I feel much the same way as Nadeleule—crocheting is SO relaxing that my eyes often get heavy while I’m doing it (especially in the evening) ;-)
But in general, I find crocheting both exciting and relaxing at the same time, because even with all the relaxation, there’s always that anticipation of what’s taking shape right then and there...
For me, it’s actually both:
First and foremost, crocheting is a way for me to relax, and I almost get nervous if I don’t get a chance to crochet for a few days. On the other hand, I sometimes feel pressured when I can’t finish something or I’m not making as much progress as I’d like.
When that happens, I just keep crocheting on a simpler project until I feel relaxed again :)
For me, crafting is the little treat of the day. :)
This afternoon, I was sitting in the garden knitting and felt so relaxed that I actually started nodding off too. It’s funny that some people here mention this, because that usually doesn’t happen to me.
I started doing crafts because I wanted to break the cycle of my thoughts during a rough patch… and I’ve stuck with it ever since.
When my thoughts start going in circles, I pick up a needle and do something that requires me to count… that helps me stop that merry-go-round in my head pretty well.
These days, I don’t really need that “trick” anymore, but I just enjoy keeping my hands busy.
Plus, I love figuring out new things—even if some of them don’t turn out quite right.
For me, it’s totally relaxing, but it also just feels good to create something new.
Satisfaction, yes—when a pattern turns out right. When a project is successfully completed.
It’s definitely relaxing.
It’s a mental workout, because I often have to count, and difficult patterns require intense concentration.
But it also helps clear my mind of the day’s worries. If my mind isn’t focused on my craft but instead on my problems and the day’s unresolved tasks, then I make mistakes and have to undo or unravel everything again.
It totally relaxes me.
And it makes me happy and satisfied when something is finished.
When you give it away as a gift and it goes down well, you feel even more satisfied.
But I’ve fallen asleep while doing it too... “I’m just going to close my eyes for a veeery short moment...” haha
Only when something goes wrong or I have to rip out a whole evening’s work because I made a mistake... then crocheting has the opposite effect of relaxation. Then I can literally feel it start to boil up inside me :D
