Definitely the mountains. I’m not really into the sea. The beach is too sandy for me :-) and just lying around is too boring.

For me, it’s exactly the opposite: the sea! I could lie on the beach for hours and watch the waves. It’s incredibly relaxing. Plus, I love cooling off on hot days. There’s always a little breeze by the sea, and when it gets really hot: off into the water!
But maybe it’s also because I have the mountains nearby and the sea is far away? (I live south of Munich.) For me, the sea is simply a place I long for.
And for Sandra, it’s the other way around: she lives in the north where there are no mountains. Could there be a connection there?

We go to the mountains every year. Our kids do want to go to the sea, so I guess we’ll
have to deal with that—someday.
I love sitting on the balcony of our vacation rental in the evening and just looking at
the mountains. We hike a lot and look forward to it anew every single time.

I love the sea! The mountains are too exhausting for me—I’d much rather walk barefoot along the beach for kilometers. That’s what relaxation means to me.

If I go on vacation, then it’s the sea—the North Sea, Sylt—but only in the fall when the crowds have died down; that’s when it’s pure relaxation with walks on the beach

Sandra, I can’t quite agree with that. We live out in the countryside, on the border with the Netherlands, and have neither mountains nor the sea nearby...

I prefer the mountains, ideally with lots of water around them. In Salzburgerland, I’m very close to the mountains, and there are rivers and lakes everywhere.

I feel the same way—I love it all. I prefer them together, like at Lake Constance or Lake Chiemsee. But if I had to choose, I’d go with the mountains. We live near the Salzburg region, after all, and we especially love it there. But as I said, we also love Lake Chiemsee and, every now and then, Lake Constance.
And in the Salzburg region, I love the lakes just as much. I’m particularly fond of Lake Wolfgang. It has both mountains and water.

I prefer going to the sea for vacation. The sandier, the more palm trees, and the clearer the water, the better. (As long as it’s different from here, that’s all that matters. That’s why I go on vacation, after all :D)
I’m too lazy for the mountains on vacation.
Besides, there’s just less sea than mountains around here... :)

It makes absolutely no difference to me... I just love being out and about. My absolute dream destination was and still is a road trip through Washington and Oregon - a vacation can hardly get more varied than that... this was in 2017... we had only booked the flight, the rental car, and the first 3 nights / the last night, for arrival and departure - otherwise, we just went with the flow.

Please forgive me for posting in an old thread, but this choice is particularly relevant to me. I really liked the comment above. I’d love to swim surrounded by mountains, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be the ocean—it would be wonderful if it were a lake, and ideally a saltwater lake. Has anyone ever been to places like that?
