Knitted sideways: how do you do that?

Dear users, dear designers,
would you like to tell me something about knitting sideways?

With sideways knitting, you don’t knit the usual way, from top to bottom or from bottom to top, but from left to right. For example, with a sweater you can start at one sleeve and crochet or knit the sweater crosswise from there over to the other sleeve. This makes it easy to create colorful lengthwise stripes, and knitted or crocheted patterns look completely different this way. 
I crocheted a simple boxy sweater this way. With this method, you can first determine the length of the piece and then work the width. I’ll take a picture of it tomorrow.
