Joining in the Round

Dear all,

when I join knitted pieces in the round—swap the first and last stitch—there’s always an ugly hole. Do you have any tricks up your sleeve???

Why do you swap them? If you knit the first stitch through the back loop and pull the second stitch tight as well, there shouldn’t be a hole. Otherwise, you can also cast on one extra stitch and knit the last one together with the first.

That’s how I learned to do it.

I didn’t mean any harm—I just wasn’t familiar with this technique at all. :)
I hope you find a way to solve the problem if my tips don’t help.

I didn’t take it badly either. Thanks for your reply ♡
I watched some YouTube videos based on your tips.

Some people just start knitting without doing anything.
Another person somehow knits a knot from the cast-on together with the last stitch.... weird things happen there ;)

Why does the round have to be closed anyway? I just keep knitting straight through… like when crocheting in spiral rounds

I get a little gap there, too....

Then you just have to deliberately knit the first stitch at the round transition “tightly.” Once you’ve done that a few times, it’ll come naturally.

I don’t really understand what this is about. When I’m knitting, I only run into the “closing a round” problem twice: after casting on and after binding off. In the second case, a small step forms, which I then even out with a yarn needle; otherwise, I just keep knitting…

It’s not a problem for me either. I do it like Wollbaerli. Since I knit my rounds (e.g. a loop) on circular needles, there’s really no “end” when knitting. When I knit with a set of double-pointed needles, you can see the transition from one needle to the next, but after a while the “larger stitches” settle through wear (e.g. on a hat), and it’s hardly noticeable anymore. I try to pull the first stitch tighter, but I’m still practicing that. a0
