Hello dear creatives,

I wrote a post that I’m not entirely sure about. Did I overlook anything?

I’d like to address the experts among you and ask:
What else could be added?

About the post: How do I dye wool myself?

Many heartfelt thanks!

Hello, do you have sheep’s wool? I dye in the sun (currently with acid dyes), but in about 3 weeks the dye plants will be ready (I’m forgetting my own language a bit, I live on Crete).
Elder for purple, onions for beige...
I built the solar box from scraps (material cost about 3 euros
Best regards, Fodele

Hello Creativa

I dye yarn myself too :-)
The tip with Easter egg dyes / Cool Kid, well, that may be enough for a first try. But the colors just aren’t as vibrant and lightfast as acid dyes...
Even with acid dyes, you can make do with just a few at the beginning and mix the rest. I wouldn’t really pour the dye over it, otherwise it will blend together a lot, which is of course bad with light-dark contrasts. I distribute it with a spoon and massage it in with my hands (wear gloves, otherwise you’ll have some explaining to do ;o) )
It’s also best to soak the yarn a bit in water with highly concentrated vinegar essence and then dye it.
I also don’t dry it in the oven or microwave, but let it air-dry and only rinse it out once the yarn is completely dry (I feel like less washes out that way).

I also dye with plants. The yarn gets more natural colors that somehow always look very harmonious. For this, you can boil the dye plants in water (some require a mordant) and dye the yarn in the remaining dye bath, or use large glass containers for solar dyeing. To do that, layer the yarn with various dye plants in the jar. Fill it up with water in which mordant has been dissolved, and place it in the sun for about 2 weeks.
This gives totally beautiful results in a very simple way.

Plants for dyeing include:
Blackberry leaves
Walnuts (leaves and shells)
Purple basil
Purple-leaf plum
Weld
Reed flowers
Elderberry
Apple tree bark
Birch leaves
Sunflowers.....and many more, just try them out.

I hope I was able to add a little more to your information.

Best, Nici
